What is ionized alkaline water?
Ionized alkaline water is produced through an electrochemical process that can change the pH of water. Alkaline water has a pH above 7, but the pH number alone does not tell us whether the water is safe or suitable for drinking.
Where minerals fit in
Water can contain dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium. The amount depends on the source and the treatment process. Check a product's actual quality report when comparing mineral levels, rather than assuming that all alkaline water has the same composition.
What does pH mean for health?
The human body maintains blood pH within a narrow range using several physiological systems. Drinking alkaline water has not been shown to meaningfully change blood pH or to prevent or treat major diseases. Hydration, safety and overall diet remain the priorities.
What about teeth?
Very acidic drinks can contribute to enamel erosion. The acidity of a beverage can be relevant to dental health, but there is limited evidence that alkaline water prevents cavities or replaces brushing with fluoride toothpaste and regular dental care.
Choosing your drinking water
Look for reliable testing, appropriate handling and a product that meets your drinking-water needs. The pH label can be a useful detail, but it is one part of the quality picture.
